One afternoon, while walking around Ortigas area, my cousin and I chanced upon this glassed café situated in Emerald Tower.
From the outside, we could see a number of disheveled chairs artistically tucked on the ceiling. Underneath them was a glass counter filled with pastries.
We invited ourselves inside Subspace, a posh coffee shop. It is a break from the usual Starbucks atmosphere. Subspace’s interiors are dominated with white hues, which make the place look elegant. On one wall stands a life-size glossy photo of an astronaut walking on the moon, and nearby it is a lamp. Too bad, I did not have my digicam with me and was not able to take good photos. There are also small comfy couches at the rear part of the café, which gives you more privacy.
We found out that Subspace was a KPop café. It posts schedules of KPop events on a visible-enough corkboard. You could also leave messages there.
There are many cutesy things in this café. For one, its table napkin has this Korean-connoted illustration. Its tables vary from white wood, steel, and two that are covered with black table linen in checkers and polka dots.
The welcoming crew encouraged us to try their bestseller, the Caramel Flan Milk Tea (at P120) which my cousin gladly ordered. It tasted like any other milk tea + caramel.
I chose to have the Purple Potato Pudding Latte as I was intrigued with how sweet potato would taste when combined with latte. I did not like it too much because I was torn whether it tasted like taro or like ube, and it was a bit too sweet for my taste. My cousin likes it, though. Surprisingly for me, the Caramel Flan Milk Tea turns out to be less sweet than the Purple Potato Pudding Latte (at P110).
I also tried their Big Bang Wonder Waffles. This could be a complete meal as it is loaded with ham, bacon, egg, and cheese. For its fattening-and-cholesterol-filled ingredients, the waffles were not oily at all! In fact, I loved how all the ingredients seemed to form a perfect family.
4 out of 5 stars
Overall, Subspace Café is a good place to hang out at during a workday because of its hip, yuppie ambiance, less crowd, wifi connectivity and it is in the middle of a bustling city. So yes, I would be back in this cafe for a quick chill out after a long day.
